A Major Opportunity for Researchers, Writers, and Artists Worldwide
State Library Victoria (Melbourne, Australia) is now accepting applications for its 2026 Fellowship Program. This prestigious program is designed to support ambitious research and creative projects that bring the Library’s massive collections to life.
While most categories are for Australian residents, the UNESCO Cities of Literature Fellowship is specifically designed for international applicants.
1. The Project: What is it about?
The program supports three main areas:
- Research: Academic study using the Library’s unique collections.
- Creative: Developing new artistic works (writing, visual arts, music, digital).
- Residency: Projects responding to the Library’s historic building and civic role.
2. The UNESCO Cities of Literature Stream (International)
This is a major investment to connect Melbourne with the global UNESCO network.
- Who can apply: Applicants must be based in and applying from a UNESCO City of Literature (e.g., Sulaymaniyah, Edinburgh, Baghdad, etc.).
- The Goal: To foster international exchange and showcase the Library’s collections globally.
3. What You Receive (The Package)
- Grant: A $15,000 AUD award (for approximately 3 months of work).
- Flights: For the UNESCO stream, return economy flights to and from Melbourne are provided.
- Workspace: A dedicated desk at the Library for 12 months.
- Access: Full support from Library staff and access to world-class archives.
- Accommodation: The Melbourne City of Literature office will provide assistance in finding accommodation, but the cost is the fellow’s responsibility (payable from the grant).
4. Who is Eligible?
- Researchers: Must have at least 10 years of professional experience.
- Creatives: Must be “mid-career” or “established” practitioners in their field.
- Note: Students cannot apply if the project is for a degree/qualification.

- Applications Close: 7 April 2026 (9:00 AM AEST)
