The Kurdish Heritage Institute NGO was established in 2003. It has two main offices in Slemani and Duhok, and it has representatives in Kirkuk and other parts of the greater Kurdistan region. The purpose of the institute is to establish cultural archives and the oral heritage of Kurdistan, including all ethnic and religious minorities, in order to register the national identity of Kurds and all other minorities who live in Kurdistan and those who have a shared history with Kurds. In order to achieve these national goals, the institute has begun systematic activities in a variety of sections, including collecting the oral culture of Kurdistan’s citizens, preserving and preparing the oral culture to accommodate art and culture as a research center, and fostering the cultural development of the people of Kurdistan in order to successfully pass this onto the next generation.
