Granada UNESCO City of Literature, part of the Arts Department of the Granada City Council, in collaboration with the University of Granada, through its Vice-Rectorates for University Extension, Heritage and Institutional Relations; Internationalisation; and Social Responsibility, Equality and Inclusion, is pleased to announce a new edition of its International Writers in Residence Programme in Granada. The programme was established with the overarching aim of strengthening international cooperation in the cultural sector in general, and in literary creation in particular.

Objectives

Granada UNESCO City of Literature and the University of Granada have established this international residency programme with the following objectives:

  • To foster connections and exchanges between writers from Granada and writers from cities and countries around the world.
  • To support the internationalisation of writers associated with Granada.
  • To strengthen the international links of Granada’s literary ecosystem and cultural community.
  • To promote Granada as a cultural city and a welcoming destination for international creative talent.

Eligibility

The International Granada Writers in Residence Programme 2026 is open to writers residing in any country and writing in any language.

What We Offer

30-night residency in Granada for two writers, from Monday, 2 November to Tuesday, 1 December 2026, inclusive, at the Corrala de Santiago, University of Granada.

Granada UNESCO City of Literature will cover the round-trip travel expenses for each selected writer from the airport nearest to their place of residence to Granada Airport.

Important: Transfers between the writer’s home and the departure airport will be the responsibility of the resident.

The University of Granada will provide accommodation in a single room on a full-board basis at its guest residence, the Corrala de Santiago.

Granada UNESCO City of Literature and the University of Granada will facilitate opportunities for resident writers to engage with Granada’s literary life, meet local authors, and participate in workshops and educational activities.

The Corrala de Santiago

The Corrala de Santiago is a unique example of sixteenth-century popular architecture in Granada. Located in the historic Realejo district, the building is organised around a rectangular courtyard with upper galleries that originally gave access to private dwellings.

Owned by the University of Granada since 1991, the building was restored and converted into a temporary residence for visiting professors and students. In recent years, it has also become a venue for cultural activities, including exhibitions, theatre performances, concerts, film screenings and lectures.

What We Request

Resident writers are expected to participate in the public activities and opportunities for engagement with Granada’s literary community organised by the Programme.

Residents are expected to devote the residency period to the development of their literary project. During the residency, they may not undertake public activities with other public or private institutions, or in other cities, without prior notification to and authorisation from the Programme organisers.

Residents are also expected to publicly acknowledge and promote their stay in Granada as International Writers in Residence of the Programme.

Important: Travel insurance and health insurance must be arranged and paid for by the resident writers.
